Final Report

This semester I feel I have gained a lot of knowledge and experience from my Practicum hours in studio production, writing and taking photo and video. I did a lot with the News Show and Interlachen.

I came to quite a few of the News Shows in the studio and it was a great way to increase my previous knowledge in studio production. I did a lot of things in high school and my dual enrollment classes where we did a news show and filmed short skits using studio equipment but it was really cool using all the new equipment in our studio here at FSC.  The first few times I helped with the News Show I did the camera, it was a job I felt very comfortable with and was pretty simple for me. I also helped deciding on how we wanted the set to look for the different segments. A lot more went into it than I realized. We had to check how the lighting looked and check headroom and that nothing awkward was sitting right above the anchors head. For example, the few incidents the FSC logo looked like devil horns coming out of Olivia’s head! It took a lot more time in the beginning of the semester than it does now because every week we seemed to find and fix more issues more efficiently. Rachel taught me a lot on using the tri caster and teleprompter. I had to be careful controlling the speed of the teleprompter with the pace of the anchor and I learned every anchor speaks with a different pattern and speed. If the teleprompter doesn’t keep up with the anchor they will have to stop and the segment will have to start over.

When I started at Florida Southern I questioned if I wanted to be a broadcast major when I found out how many writing courses were required for the major. In high school I loved being on camera and I loved playing with and learning the technology that was involved. I very seldom had to write anything besides storyboards. This semester I wrote a lot of readers for the news show. I realized how short news show stories really are. The best readers were sometimes just three sentences. I realized I loved writing them when Rachel Facebook messaged me to tell me she had no edits for my reader. I felt that I was better at writing than I gave myself credit. Then I moved on to writing copy for the yearbook. I was really nervous on having to write a similar story but 300 words versus 3 sentences. I wrote a couple and sent them over to Kelly who is the copy editor for Interlachen.  A few days later I got an email that said she liked my style of writing and that she attached the edits. To my surprise there were few changes and it made me really happy.

The last area I worked in (mentioned a bit above) was with the Interlachen team. This semester in Interlachen was great. I made really great friends that I feel comfortable around and have a lot of fun with and am constantly learning things from! I learned how to use cameras that I absolutely love using. I had never taken photos that had to be professional before. This semester I took portraits of people and photos at events. I never imagined myself doing either, and I actually really enjoyed it! What I was more excited for was filming events. I thought it would be super easy for me since I had done similar things before. Kenzie had so much to show me and I learned a whole new style to filming. For my last few Practicum hours I started helping Kenzie upload and organize the video from this semester onto our server. I am hoping to learn more about editing next semester and possibly see my stories, photos and videos in this year’s year book.

It's December!

Monday, December 2nd 2013: I helped Kenzie (Interlachen video editor) upload video from memory cards and organize in easy to find files for when we start editing.

The semester is coming to an end :)

Monday, November 18th: I wrote three stories for Interlachen for events that I have attended this year: Mocsquerade ball, blast off, and winter wonderland. I also received back edits from the copy editor and my story for move-in day had very little errors. I am starting to like writing stories like this and readers a lot more than I thought I would.

Wednesday, November 20th: I helped film at winter wonderland from 9 pm-11 pm. It was a cool event to watch and it was interesting to find good shots even in the dark atmosphere.

Thursday, November 21st: I helped watch and find good clips in videos from this year with Kenzie (video editor for Interlachen) from 7-10. It was interesting seeing how much work goes into just the initial steps of video editing. I also realized that it probably isn't in anyones best interest to film an entire event nonstop and rather just get shorter, more interesting clips.

11/11 - 11/15

Tuesday November 12th:
I wrote two stories for yearbook about events I have been too: move in day and the freshman dance party. It was my first time writing copy for the yearbook and instead of just needing 3 good sentences (like a news show reader) I had to write about 300 words on my personal experience.

Friday November 15th:
I wrote a reader for the news show about the school musical "next to Normal"

The first week of November

Monday November 4th 10:40 am - Helped with news show. Ran teleprompter and helped set up shots.

Wednesday November 6th: Wrote 6th annual Merry Market reader for next weeks news show. Found all information online.

Thursday November 7th 10:00 am: Interviewed Ms. Coso in career center about upcoming events. She was very interested in being talked to more next semester about different events and I think this is a good idea because personally I never really know much about their events that are upcoming.

Friday November 8th: Wrote a reader about "Moctails" a career center event and also the seminar they are hosting to help prepare students for the event.

Monday, September 30th 2013: 10:40 News show
This week, I ran the teleprompter. A very simple concept but harder than you would think. I really enjoyed doing something new though and participating.

Tuesday, October 1st 2013: Wrote a reader
I wrote about the "Chip-In" for children golf tournament coming up next week. I have learned this semester I like writing about positive things unlike you normally hear about in the news. I also learned you really have to do your research to find enough information (even for a short reader!)

Wednesday October 2nd 2013: 4:30 pm shot video of watermelon blast for Interlachen
I learned how to use the Cannon Rebel cameras to film manual focus videos. I really enjoy taking video.

I also wrote another reader about the new printing set up starting after fall break. Not only did I learn a lot of useful information for myself, but I feel like I wrote a reader that will help student on campus too.

September 23rd - 26th

Monday, September 23rd :
10-11 am  I helped set up portraits for yearbook. I met Dion at 10 in the Comm building and we took all the equipment and set up pieces to his car then drove over to the collegiate room where we unloaded and set everything up. This was my first time setting up so I learned a lot about the different parts of equipment ad how they work together.

10:40 am I went to the studio and helped with the news show. I sat at the switcher and made sure we recording whenever we were supposed to be. I also got to watch someone on the teleprompter. I have done both of these jobs at my other school but it was a little different.

1-3 pm I went back and helped with portraits. I did some roping (trying to convince people to come get their picture taken!) and I also took a lot of the pictures. Portraits these past two weeks has been my first time ever really taking pictures and not video. I really liked it.

Thursday, September 26th :
12-1 pm I did portraits again. I was the only one who could make it to this shift to take pictures so I did all the jobs: roping, making sure people filled out the sign up sheet, and took the pictures.

9/16 - 9/20

Thursday September 19th 12-1 pm I did portraits for yearbook.
I was going to have more hours doing this however a lot went wrong and we had to cancel portraits Monday - Wednesday and even parts of Friday that I was signed up to do. I learned that in order to have projects like that to work you need a lot of planning and knowledgeable, committed team members.

Another hour...

9/15/13: I wrote my second local news reader. I realized it's hard to find news that relates to the Lakeland and FSC community that doesn't involve crimes. I found an interesting story about different groups right here in Lakeland Florida that are helping fight against children's hunger which is something that means a lot to me. I learned that writing about news doesn't always have to be only talking about theft, murders and rapes. It can also reach out to the community to help others.

I have been attending the Interlachen meetings and hope to do some work in the next few weeks with them.

Practicum hours thus far....

9/7/13: I wrote a local news reader for the news show about an upcoming attraction at Sea World. Although it wasn't aired because we didn't have time  Idid learn what a reader was and how to write one efficiently. I also realized maybe I like news writing a little more than I thought I would.

9/9/13: I helped with the first news show. I got to see all the different sections we tape, and briefly learn about different pieces of equipment. My specific job was camera. A few issues we had to deal with was making sure the zoom was efficiently making whoever was being filmed look not too close or not too far away, make sure their hands didn't look awkward in the shot and make sure the background was not a distraction. With everyone's opinions and input we worked together to make the different sections look great.
